Uco Valley: Mendoza's Wine Region with the Andes at Your Table

The Uco Valley is one of Mendoza’s most spectacular wine regions — and probably the one where the mountains steal almost as much attention as the wine.

It’s about 1.5 hours from Mendoza city, stretching south through Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos. The vineyards sit higher than those around the city, with some of the highest reaching well over 1,000 metres above sea level.

And you can feel the difference in the wine. Cool nights, lots of sunshine and high-altitude vineyards give Uco wines a different character — often fresher, more structured and more mineral than the softer, fruitier styles you may find in lower Mendoza.

But honestly, the wine isn’t the only reason I’d make the drive.

You come for the combination: vineyards, incredible food, modern bodegas and the Andes sitting right behind your table.

A few things to know

• It’s not close. Uco is a full-day trip from Mendoza city, so don’t try to squeeze it between other plans.
• Book your bodegas. Most visits are by reservation, and the wineries are spread out. I’d choose two bodegas and a long lunch rather than trying to visit five.
• Leave time to look around. The views are part of the experience. Don’t spend the whole day inside tasting rooms.
• Don’t drive after drinking. Book a driver or tour and enjoy the wine without worrying about the road home.

Is Uco worth it?

If you have the time, absolutely.

It’s a little more effort than visiting Luján de Cuyo or Maipú, but that’s also part of the appeal.
